Dr. Karen Whala has always had a soft spot for the older pets she’s treated in practice, and saw a need for beloved pets to pass peacefully at home rather than in a clinic setting. To that end, she started Peaceful Passing in 2018 to help families assist their terminally ill, injured, or suffering pets as they transition from life in the Fresno and Clovis areas. She finds that pets are so much more relaxed and peaceful when they pass at home, and it is truly a gift owners give their furry friends. Dr. Whala grew up in the Eastern foothills of Fresno County in the small towns of Dunlap and Miramonte. She obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Animal Science and Management at UC Davis. During her youth, she operated a children’s petting zoo and traveled to schools, birthday parties and library functions educating children on animal care. Her animals included everything from iguanas and ducklings to lambs and frogs, and it was during these formative pet-owning years that she decided to become a veterinarian. In 2006, Dr. Whala graduated with her veterinary degree from UC Davis. She began practicing at a local area mixed animal practice and worked with dairy cattle, horses, dogs and cats and later transitioned to small animals exclusively. She took a few years break from private practice, during which she earned a Masters in Public Health and Board Certification in Veterinary Preventive Medicine. When Dr. Whala returned to private practice, it was to start Peaceful Passing. Dr. Whala lives in Fresno and keeps busy working at a local clinic part-time, helping families assist in the peaceful passing of their pets, volunteering with Pathfinders (a boys and girls club), backpacking, and hosting friends in her home.

a dedicated veterinarian with a passion for helping pets live healthier, happier lives. With expertise in preventive care, diagnostics, and compassionate treatment Dr. Karen has always held a deep compassion for senior and ailing pets, recognizing early in her career the profound need for these beloved companions to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by the people who love them most. In 2018, she founded Peaceful Passing to provide in-home euthanasia services for families in the Fresno and Clovis areas—helping pets transition with dignity, comfort, and grace. Dr. Karen believes that a peaceful goodbye at home is one of the most meaningful gifts an owner can give. In her experience, pets are noticeably more at ease in the familiar surroundings of their home, and she is honored to support both animals and their families during such a tender time. A native of Fresno County, Dr. Karen grew up in the foothill communities of Dunlap and Miramonte. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Management from UC Davis, where her passion for animal care began to flourish. As a young entrepreneur, she operated a mobile petting zoo that visited schools, birthday parties, and libraries, using her unique menagerie—from iguanas and frogs to ducklings and lambs—to teach children about responsible animal care. She went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 2006 and began her career in mixed animal practice, treating dairy cattle, horses, dogs, and cats. Later, she shifted her focus exclusively to companion animals. During a break from private practice, she pursued a Master’s in Public Health and became board-certified in Veterinary Preventive Medicine—broadening her expertise and deepening her commitment to community well-being. Dr. Karen now resides in Fresno (though she dreams of returning to country life), where she continues to provide gentle end-of-life care for pets, volunteer with Pathfinders youth ministry, backpack in the Sierras, and warmly welcome friends into her home.

Dr. Mitesh Shah has been caring for animals as long as he can remember. Starting young with his family's many pets, and further with his involvement in 5-H through his teen years. In 2007 he graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Integrative Biology, and went on to receive his veterinary degree in 2013 from the University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine. He has practiced in small animal clinical settings throughout California since 2013, and locally since moving to Fresno in 2018. As a veterinarian Dr. Shah is passionate about alleviating suffering, and believes that although saying goodbye to our furry companions is one of the hardest acts a pet parent goes through, it is also one of the greatest gifts we can give to our pets. During his first year out of vet school Dr. Shah worked in a busy practice that awarded him the opportunity to provide in home hospice care and euthanasia. He found these house calls very rewarding, knowing that the animal had passed peacefully in the comfort of their home, surrounded by their loved ones. Dr. Shah lives in Fresno with his wife, dog, cat, and young son. He continues to work part-time at a local small animal hospital, and enjoys gardening, hiking, and time with his family on his days off.

Dr. Gary graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. After graduation, he married Dr. Bethany and they moved west. Gary spent a year at a mixed animal practice in Oregon before moving to Fresno where he worked at All Creatures Veterinary Clinic from 2011-2021. Gary grew up constantly learning and finding ways to help others. He loved everything animal related, whether it was watching wildlife or visiting pet stores. His parents allowed him to have a variety of pets growing up from hamsters, fish, parakeets to iguanas... as long as they did not need live food. Dr. Gary believes precious memories with your pet should never be overshadowed by a stressful goodbye. He has first hand experience the stress from saying goodbye to his first dog Willy at the clinic, and since then being able to say goodbye to two other dogs at home. That is why a peaceful passing is so important. In his free time Dr. Gary enjoys family time working around his small hobby farm, watching sports and hiking around the Sierras.

Dr. Hamza Ishaq was raised in the suburbs of NYC in New York. She knew from a young age that she desired to work with animals when older and worked hard to accomplish this. She pursued an undergraduate degree in Animal Science at Cornell University (2009) in New York, followed by a graduate degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at the University of Florida in Gainesville (2014). Dr. Gersten enjoys being a veterinarian and has completed additional advanced certifications in holistic medicine (Veterinary Acupuncture and Chinese medicine), dentistry, and canine rehabilitation (physical therapy) so that she can increase her success when treating patients. She currently focuses on wellness and preventative care with a goal of improving patient experiences and reducing fear at the vet. In her free time, Dr. Gersten enjoys taking her dog Marty McFly to the park, thrifting for vintage and antique treasures, trying out new restaurants in the area, and spending time with her family, friends, and pets (she has one dog and three cats!) Dr. Gersten is excited to be joining the Codapet team and to be able to offer affordable end-of-life veterinary care in the familiarity of a pet’s own home. With Dr. Gersten’s compassion, experience, and kindness, your furry child will have an easy transition to Rainbow Bridge.

Bethany spent a year at a small animal exclusive practice in Washington state, where she was first introduced to in-home euthanasia. She gravitated towards helping pet parents and their pets in their last moments, when it seemed other doctors did not find an interest.Growing up, Bethany had many childhood pets and occasionally tended injured wildlife. The ability to calm and comfort animals seemed to come naturally to her. It is always difficult to say your final goodbye to your Fur Baby. Having CodaPet send a Vet to our home to assist in the peaceful passing of our precious baby made the painful experience of our loss comforting. The Vet was very compassionate, thoughtful and kind with my fur baby and my family including my other dog during the entire process. My Fur Baby was very comfortable throughout the entire process and just peacefully went to sleep while cuddled up next to me. After his passing, we were given private alone time to say our final good byes. He then was gently wrapped in a blanket and placed into basket and taken away for cremation. I felt comforted knowing that he was no longer in pain and passed so peacefully. My family felt so blessed to have a compassionate service come to our home so we could say our final goodbyes in privacy. I will always be thankful for CodaPet.
From the very beginning dr. Gary was very sympathetic and showed us that he really cared. It was so hard having to make that decision to have our girl put down and he gave us all the time in the world and made us feel better about the whole process. He took the time to send us a card as well after and it really made us feel better.
We LOVE Dr. Karen Whala, and will definitely use her services again, as needed. She is patient, kind, compassionate, and professional. She made us feel ok about our tough decision to euthanize our beloved Lab, Zara. We will highly recommend her to anyone in our recent situation.
Karen was very professional and sensitive to our needs. It was a tremendously difficult experience for us, but we’re confident we made the right choice.
This was our first time going through something like this with a pet let alone as a family. The comfort it put us and the time it allowed us to be with our dog in his last moments made this a very great experience. We loved Diesel so much and it made me happy to know he passed with us around him and in the comfort of his own home. Thank you
Dr. Whala was a blessing to our family. She was kind, warm and gentle with our 11 yo Rottie. She is a wonderful person and Doctor. We found her soothing and informative. She explained every step in the process. The entire experience, for as painful as it is, was made more peaceful and supportive than we ever expected. Thank you.
Dr. Gary was kind, thoughtful, and patient. He was so gentle with our fragile senior dog, and really thought of everything to accommodate him and us. We are so grateful for Dr. Gary and CodaPet for going above and beyond during one of the most difficult times we’ve ever experienced.
Dr. Bethany made the process of us losing our dog so much easier. She took her time and helped us grieve. I appreciate her kindness and understanding.
Dr. Whala was gentle, compassionate and professional. She reassured me that it was the right time and encourage us alm the time needed to say goodbye to our sweet Bear.

His compassion and kindness through the process made us feel comfortable that we made the right decision to go with Codapet. He followed up on us and delivered our Foxy with care and compassion truly appreciated him for all he did to make our Foxy comfortable during her last minutes with us.
Dr. Whala is a very kind and compassionate person. She made what was a very difficult situation, very easy for everyone, and more importantly, our dog. She explained each step and was so loving with our dog. I would highly recommend her and this service to anyone that needs it for their pet. I will never take any of my pets to the veterinary office to euthanize them again. It’s such an emotional thing and it was so comforting to go through this at home. She is a wonderful person, what a gift she is. We appreciate having this service very much.
Dr. Whala is a vet who will help you & your dear pet through this sad, hard time of good-bye. Her expertise & experience are matched by her kind, gentle nature - I know this is the most loving way to end a dear pet’s life …..in their own surroundings with you. Thank you .
Dr. Marlene is one in a million. Our 15 year old Tibetan Terrier had Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. She came to our home and was calm , sympathetic , and professional . She has a way that makes a person feel ok in such a terrible situation. She did not rush us . She explained in detail how and what to expect during the process. She gave us as much time as we needed to spend our last minutes with “ Bentley “ . You could not find a Veterinarian better to help you through this horrible part of life. We will be forever grateful to her .
I have told several people about the procedure and highly recommend Dr. Wahala due to her explicit explanation of the procedure and her sincere compassion. She made sure it was an easy transition for Cassie and for me.
I was very pleased with how patient she was with us. Our guy Dozer was extremely nervous and she made it very pleasant for him. She took her time and he didn’t even realize that she was there. He went peacefully and we are so greatful for her kind and caring gentle way i n taking care of him.
Dr. Gary was so very kind and compassionate. We got to be with our cat, Daisy, in one of her favorite spots of our home. Dr. Gary gave took us through the process, then gave us the time we needed with Daisy before he administered the sedative, then again before he administered the final shot, and after. We got to cuddle with her the whole time. He took Daisy's body away and his wife returned with her ashes. The company that they work with included two river rocks with Daisy's name on them that were with her when she was cremated and are a perfect size to hold in your hand. We also got the keepsake of Daisy's paw in clay, which was very nicely done, however we wouldn't get that again as it doesn't look like her paw to us (due to the nature of how much bigger a paw looks when pressed into clay). We liked the inked paw prints on a card that Daisy and I made together the day before. We very much appreciate how patient, kind, and compassionate Dr. Gary was and that this service was available for our beloved cat.
Dr. Gary H was highly knowledgeable about Sam's condition and assured me I was doing the right thing. I will ALWAYS use your services in the future. I felt good knowing he left so peacefully

Dr Karen Whala was so kind and compassionate as well as tender with our sweet Lab, Kaydee. It is obvious she cares deeply. We could not have asked for a better experience for our sweet girl in this potentially scary and confusing time. Kaydee was relaxed and comfortable through the whole process, for which we are so grateful. ❤️

Working as a veterinarian with Codapet isn’t just a job — it’s a calling rooted deeply in compassion, empathy, and a strong desire to ease both physical pain and emotional distress. Codapet’s mission to provide in-home pet euthanasia services offers a much-needed alternative for pet owners who want to say goodbye to their beloved animals in the comfort of home. Behind every appointment, every goodbye, and every story, there’s a vet making that experience possible with sensitivity, medical professionalism, and emotional strength. Building Comfort in the Most Difficult Moments For most Codapet vets, the biggest differentiator from traditional clinic practice is the environment in which they operate. Home visits allow pets to stay in a familiar space surrounded by the people who love them most. Vets quickly learn that every home is different — some are filled with quiet tears and soft goodbyes, while others are full of children asking questions or elderly owners who need extra time and reassurance. The vet walks into each situation knowing they’re not just there for a medical procedure; they’re a guide through one of the hardest decisions a pet parent can face. This means managing clinical needs, like dosing and sedation protocols, alongside the emotional dynamics of a grieving family. The combination of these elements requires a very specific skill set — one that goes beyond the typical veterinary toolbox. The Emotional Weight of the Role Many Codapet vets describe this work as both deeply fulfilling and emotionally intense. On one hand, they feel honored to be trusted during such a sacred moment. On the other, providing euthanasia services, sometimes multiple times in a day, can be emotionally exhausting. Burnout is a real concern in veterinary medicine overall, but especially in end-of-life care. However, Codapet vets often report a sense of peace in knowing they are helping both pets and families by providing a more compassionate alternative to clinic euthanasia. The ability to offer comfort — not just physical relief to the animal, but emotional support to the family — brings a level of meaning to the work that sustains many through the tough days. Some vets develop small personal rituals to help cope — lighting a candle after a visit, taking a walk, or writing in a journal. Others lean on the Codapet community of professionals who truly understand the highs and lows of the work. This sense of shared purpose, and the knowledge that their work really matters, is a powerful motivator. Scheduling, Autonomy, and Flexibility Another unique part of being a Codapet vet is the autonomy. Unlike traditional clinic settings that can feel rushed and rigid, Codapet vets have the freedom to set their own schedules, allowing for better work-life balance. This flexibility is especially important for those who are parents, have personal medical needs, or want to practice part-time. This autonomy also extends to how they manage visits. While Codapet provides protocols and support, vets are trusted to adapt to the specific needs of each case. They decide how to communicate with families, how much time to spend during each appointment, and how to create a peaceful environment. That said, with freedom comes responsibility. Codapet vets need to be self-disciplined, organized, and emotionally self-aware. They also need to be excellent communicators, capable of navigating complex emotional terrain while maintaining a sense of calm and confidence. The Impact of Aftercare Options One of the more practical aspects of the Codapet vet’s role involves understanding and offering aftercare options. Vets need to explain cremation choices, keepsakes (like paw prints or fur clippings), and sometimes assist with transportation of the pet if chosen. These steps, while technical in nature, are part of the grieving process for the family. Having a clear understanding of these options — and being able to present them in a gentle, respectful way — is critical. It’s also important that vets are equipped to answer questions and manage expectations. Codapet provides training, resources, and even vet community forums to ensure all team members feel supported in these logistical parts of the visit. Collaboration and Support Though Codapet vets often work independently, they are far from alone. A strong backend team supports them — from scheduling and logistics to customer service and technical troubleshooting. Vets also have access to a growing online community of peers through Codapet, where they can share experiences, ask clinical questions, and support one another. Vets frequently collaborate with local pet hospitals, crematories, and other Codapet professionals to ensure smooth coordination. This spirit of teamwork means a lot — especially when unexpected situations arise, like a pet passing before the vet arrives or families requesting urgent same-day appointments. Having a responsive operations team, local coordinators, and helpful tech tools (like the Codapet calendar or appointment dashboard) makes the process more efficient and reduces stress on the vet’s side. This smooth coordination allows vets to focus on what matters most — compassionate care. Continuous Learning and Growth Codapet vets aren’t static professionals; they are constantly evolving. Many choose to further their training in grief counseling, communication skills, or palliative care. Codapet encourages this growth by offering educational resources and periodically updating protocols based on the latest best practices in veterinary euthanasia. By working in such an emotionally nuanced field, vets also grow personally. They become more patient, empathetic, and resilient — qualities that serve them not just in their profession, but in their own lives and relationships. The Bigger Picture At its core, Codapet’s mission is about changing the way pet euthanasia is experienced — making it more humane, more peaceful, and more aligned with what pets and their families truly need. The vets are the beating heart of that mission. Without their expertise, compassion, and professionalism, the service wouldn’t exist. Each Codapet vet is helping reshape the standard of end-of-life care. They’re educating families about their options, empowering them to make informed choices, and offering a level of compassion that lingers long after the appointment ends. Final Thoughts Being a vet with Codapet is unlike any other veterinary role. It combines clinical skill with emotional intelligence, personal freedom with deep responsibility, and solo work with a strong sense of community. While the work is challenging, it is also profoundly rewarding. For many vets, Codapet has reignited their passion for veterinary medicine by reminding them why they entered the field in the first place: to care, to heal, and to be present when it matters most.
Dr. Gary was extremely compassionate and gentle. He explained everything to us and gave us the time we needed to process the information and make decisions that we were comfortable with.
